I read The Demolished Man last night (no, not "finished reading", I read the whole thing last night). It's a very good book. It's SciFi story with a murder mystery feel to it. People who are appalled by weak female characters might want to skip this one (at a few points I found myself becoming annoyed that the female characters seemed unable to do something sensible like hitting the antagonist with a heavy object).
The downside is that now several ST-TNG episodes and large portions of Babylon 5 seem much less original. Although having "Bester" as the name for a PsyCop suddenly makes tremendous sense.
Posted by matt at November 29, 2003 02:17 PMWell, honestly, Babylon 5 never was all that original. It ripped ideas off of a whole lot of literature, previous shows, and well, the world. Now don't get me wrong here, I loved Babylon 5 and I still do. What made it special was its weaving of said ripped off ideas, use of CGI when no one else really was, and the balls to do what they did on such a small budget and being able to pull it off with the (generally) terrible acting.
Wow...did I actually say that about one of my fav shows? *goes off and cries*
Posted by: Chris at December 1, 2003 02:20 PMWell, I did rather like some of the characters from Bab 5 (Marcus and Ivonava spring to mind), and the story arc was appealing. What I didn't realize was to what extent the Psy Corps was lifted directly out of The Demolished Man.
